Jean Jérôme Augustin Bussière (1872—1958), born in Chard in the Creuse Department of France’s Limousin Region, earned his doctoral degree in medicine in 1895 from the Naval Medical School in Bordeaux. Before arriving in China, Dr. Bussière served for 18 years in tropical regions, battling deadly diseases like plague, cholera, and smallpox in Senegal and India. He practiced and taught medicine while promoting the scientific principles of Louis Pasteur and his disciples.Dr. Bussière arrived in China in 1913, where he would live for 41 years. He treated innumerable patients, from dignitaries to ordinary people. He was instrumental in introducing Western medical sciences and biological technologies to China, and staunchly supported the Chinese people in their resistance against Japanese fascism. A true champion of internationalism, he is remembered as an everlasting friend to the Chinese people.
